Marital Harmony

I have just returned from two days at my parents' (three-bedroom) house.  My sister and my grandma were also there.  We had a very brief Pesach seder!  We ate!  We drank in great moderation, uncharacteristically!  Dr. S got food poisoning!  (Not from my mother, from a restaurant.)  My kids drove the tractor!

However, due to the large number of people who snore, talk in their sleep, or get up multiple times at weird hours, we arranged ourselves so:

My boys slept in the sewing room in a pack and play and on a mattress.  My sister Pru slept on the bed with them (badly.)

My grandma slept in the guest bedroom all by herself.

My spouse slept on the living room pull-out couch. The dog, who normally sleeps on the couch*, slept in the dining room.

My mother slept alone in her/my dad's bed.  I slept on an inflatable mattress in their walk-in closet.**

My dad?  He slept outdoors, in the sauna, in a sleeping bag.  No, I don't really know why.

* The day my parents found her as a skinny stray has to be the most-improved day of this dog's life, I tell you what.
** Amazingly quiet and dark, especially with a fan outside for white noise.  Highly recommended.

Because he could. Because he could.

I love family times when everyone sleeps in weird places. I have a favorite memory of being in a truly tiny house (as in smaller than my current small apartment? Might have been as small, anyway) with three aunts, my mother, and Sugar. My mother slept on the kitchen floor, which she just about filled.

    1. Now *that* is impressive. There's a chemistry term: cubic closest packed.

  2. this post made me laugh. It's so funny what happens when families get together. People end up in closets and saunas. Hope your husband feels better.

    1. Thank you! He's completely recovered.

It seems totally reasonable to me to sleep in the sauna. Families. (Sane families preferred.)

  3. I'm glad you had a wonderful Pesach and visit with family! The quiet, dark walk-in closet sounds lovely. Your father is hilarious. My condolences to Dr. S. with the restaurant food poisoning.

My parents are coming down this weekend for Easter. I'm considering conscripting my mom into pruning duty again. (I need to finish pruning blackberries at church and grapes at the community orchard.) it's supposed to be sunny and 60 degrees, which will be a nice change from last week!

    1. Candy, baked goods, and pruning: what could be better? I hope you also had a wonderful visit!

Dr. S later took a 3-hour nap in the dark, quiet closet and pronounced it ideal for the purpose!
