Something Cheerful For A Change

For me, the best part of having kids is watching them change as they grow up - seeing them learn new skills, new words, new ideas, one at a time.  Tatoe, who has just turned two, is very verbal.  He says things like "It's not cooled off yet; it's still too hot" (in a lisping little baby voice, of course) or "I put the sweet potato in the cup!"

Last week, we were reading his bedtime books, one of which is "Time For Bed", and- I was so proud!- he made his first little toddler joke.

"It's time for bed, little mouse, little mouse-"
"It a goat!"  Giggle giggle.
"It's time to sleep, little bird, little bird-"
"It a GOAT!"  Hilarious giggling.
"It's time to sleep, little deer, little deer-"
"IT A GOAT!"  Everyone dissolves into helpless laughter.

  1. I love the toddler jokes. They are the best, especially with the lisping toddler voice. Kiddo is firmly in that phase and, at times, it almost compensates for the epic tantrums.

    1. Tatoe likes to collapse, wailing, in the entryway to the library. The baby voice is the best!

Isn't the language development awesome? I'll be taking my daughter (who'll be two on Monday) to her 2 year check-up this week, and in the reminder notice I got one of the things they said they'll be looking for is a vocabulary of 25 words. Hah! She can name more than 25 _animals_. Probably easily 25 items of food. And that's just the tip of the ice berg. And what I find most amazing is I only experience her English vocabulary; her German is probably just as good, though she mostly uses that at daycare and we only get a handful of German words at home. How on earth it develops so effortlessly is amazing.

    1. Language is amazing. And logic, especially when you can practically see the gears turning in their wee noggins!

the development is fascinating! my kiddo is 17 months, I can't wait to see what he's like at 2 yrs... Time for Bed is his all time favorite book, EVER. Right now he likes to tell us all the sounds the animals make.

    1. That transition from one word to putting words together to sentences is my very favorite part of language development. And now Tatoe is asking me "What dat called?" all the time. And "Whatchoo making?". It's all too cute! The little moo moos - I bet they're fantastic.

  4. I LOVE that age. My Little just turned two also. He was a bit behind on his speech development, and as I stalled on figuring out speech therapy, he caught up and went above and beyond in the past 4 weeks since he turned 2. Not making jokes yet, but beyond cute. That lispy little voice.
We fight over who gets to put Little to bed because our Big (4 in December) sounds only a smidgeon less difficult (and perhaps only less difficult because he does go to daycare 35 hours/week) than Bug. EVERY SINGLE night he has a screaming/hitting/"cursing" meltdown which, once he calms down, he states is because "I don't like the bath. Its not fun. I don't like brushing. I don't like to pee".
So, yes, I love the toddler development phase.

    1. We get equal parts of 'It's too hard!" and "It's BORING!!!"

We're up to 15 hours a week of preschool. So far it's mainly inspired some truly epic meltdowns (why are you head-butting me, child?) but... well... they grow out of it? Someone tell me they grow out of it.

    1. Tonight it was "It a cockadoodledoo!" It's so hard to keep from laughing and laughing with him, because not conducive to bedtime, but man. Toddlers are pretty funny.
