In Which I Bite My Tongue

Said to me, and I said nothing:  "I have a migraine, and the only thing that ever helps is Excedrin, and I can't take anything* because I'm pregnant, so I just yelled at my kid and had a miserable morning instead."

(Not me. Obviously.)

*Probably not that much aspirin every day, no.  At 5.5 weeks, probably once, yes.  Or!  The rest of the ingredients, without the aspirin, even!

  1. I would have said something. Perhaps she would have felt better about taking one Excedrin once-in-a-while hearing it was ok from someone who would know.

I went to the ACS meeting in Chicago when I was 5 months pregnant with C1, and my labmates and I all went out for tapas. I'd never tried sangria and was sad to miss the opportunity when a MD-PhD labmate explained it was quite likely JUST FINE to have a little wine in the second trimester. I felt happy.

    1. This particular person is sweet, but dumber than a bag of rocks, and also thinks she has a gluten intolerance (but I've seen her eating pita chips while saying this). So... yeah.

A little is fine! A lot is not so fine! But yeah.

I have had a colleague explain to me at length that she must! avoid! sugar! while eating a cup-cake topped with enough icing (frosting to you) to smother a yak. And a diet coke. Because sugar!

I'm always dumbstruck by the people that take a "nothing at any time" approach to pain during pregnancy. I always assume that they've made a carefully thought out and well researched decision about their self-care. I also wonder if they are eating any fast food, stepping off curbs, or leaving the house.

    1. I'm the kind of person who finds "I am more likely to be struck by lightning than to have X happen in pregnancy" to actually be comforting, but some people get alarmed, y'know? Also I assume that most people are scientific morons, because the data I have thus far collected fully supports this hypothesis.

  3. I don't know if could have bitten my tongue. I pointed out the silly-ness of my former pregnant labmate (she's no longer either one), who loved chocolate, but wouldn't eat it for the fear of caffeine! She wouldn't have one chocolate kiss because "OMG caffeine and the baby!!1!" Meanwhile, I had a cup of coffee every day when I was pregnant because OMG science and the lack of evidence that my caffeine consumption would harm the fetus!

    1. OMG one tiny piece of chocolate! PERMANENT BRAIN DAMAGE!! (I also drank coffee while pregnant, once the horrible nausea subsided such that I could drink anything but water. Because data.)

Oh, well, if she'd rather have a skull-crunching headache and stagger through the day weeping and squinting than SCIENCE....

(Pet peeve airing - was this a 'real' migraine? Or a 'headache but no one will pity me if I just say headache'? Because if I was having an unmedicated migraine, being snappish with a toddler would BE THE LEAST OF IT. But your mileage may vary. I am a snowflake. And so one).

    1. I have no data, but yes, it also annoys me: migraine = vomiting on trees; headache = feeling bad). I never fail to be shocked by how many people think science has nothing to do with them when pregnant. (She later had a miscarriage so good thing she didn't take anything, eh? Because that totally made a difference.)
