Weaning: A Tragedy In Four Acts

Tatoe has been nursing four times a day: morning, morning nap, afternoon nap, bedtime.  He rarely nurses for more than ten minutes.

Anyhow.  Today I cut off the afternoon-nap-nursing (and all nursing-on-demand) and substituted a sippy cup of soymilk.  Like his brother, he prefers it to cow milk.  So he didn't get any MAAH between 9 AM and 8 PM.  He spent most of those hours pulling on my shirt and saying "I want MAAH!".

Well, honey, I want a vacation in the Caribbean, too.

  1. Oh the weaning! I weaned Kiddo a month ago today. It wasn't awful, but I did have my share of Kiddo pulling at my shirt saying "NUSSSSSSS!" (His version of the word nurse.) I'd hand him a sippy of milk and quote the great philosopher Mr. Jagger, "that you can't always get what you want, but if you try some time you just might find you get what you need."

I felt sort-of bad about weaning him as I had no excuse/reason to do so other than I was tired of it. At the same time, I'm happier now and Kiddo is perfectly fine. So, I don't think I've damaged him for life.

    1. I think the correct answer to "when are you going to wean the kid" is always "when one of us gets tired of it." Hurrah!

I'm inclined to agree...the correct answer is definitely "When one of us gets tired of it." I nursed both of my girls for 15ish months. I knew it was time to start weaning when the very act of getting ready to feed one of them made me a little twitchy!

  2. Yay, weaning! I believe I took the easy way out, and C1 abandoned with relatives for a few days. I can't actually remember weaning C2... He's obviously not still nursing, so it happened a while ago, but the details escape me. I think he liked food so much, he was ok cutting back the mom milk. Also, as long as he could grab my ear and be rocked before nap/bedtime, the lack of milk wasn't a big deal. Hey! Have you thought of introducing a lovey? C1 didn't actually take to his until he weaned. Ditto for C2, come to think of it.
Good luck! Perhaps you can get that vacation in the Caribbean over winter holidays, since you'll be close enough to abandon YOUR children with relatives soon!

    1. He seems more fond of the panda than before. We've been trying! He also likes the penguin, but only to bite its beak.

If the spouse gets a permanent job next year, he told me he's planning to go drop off the kids and cook me a three-course dinner. I want to go stay at a B&B too. Next year in the Caribbean!

    2. Remind me to show you C1's lovey from his early toddler and teething years. He had an odd comfort habit of biting Eeyore's mane and ripping the hair off while going to sleep. The pediatrician wasn't concerned and he eventually stopped it, but it did freak out the occasional babysitter.

    1. I KNOW! We're on Act Two already; I left him at Nicole's house on Friday and... er... just didn't nurse him before nap. Next week, evening nursing gets it!
