Someone of whom I am very fond just tried to argue to me that single-payer health insurance is Bad, Actually, because it might average out less good than what some people currently have. This same person stayed in a government job long enough to be able to buy the good government health insurance, at a greatly discounted rate, for the rest of their life. They also have Medicare.
I gave up on the argument before spontaneously combusting but oooh boy. What a position to take.
"I got mine, jack, screw everyone else."
ReplyDeleteThen they asked me if I'd be willing to pay more taxes for the local schools next year because the unions want it. No, but I'd pay more if we all got nationalized health care! I'm still terrified of going back to "pre existing conditions" because I might literally die!
DeleteThere's nothing stopping us from having a system that combines single payer with additional private insurance. Plenty of countries do that and make it work. There's trade-offs.
ReplyDeleteThat's more or less exactly what I said!
DeleteYikes. It reminds me of the arguments from BIL and SIL. One is in a union job, and the other is gov't AND union.
ReplyDeleteI attempted to argue that it's like public schools, but...
