To Wean (v):

1) To forcibly deprive my precious baby* of his most favorite thing in the whole world;
2) To put an end to the chronic mastitis and FUCKING THRUSH which I have endured for ten months;
3) Both of the above, simultaneously.

The time has come, Dear Readers, to start weaning Tatoe.  (Perhaps you would think some previous time would also have qualified; you would be correct.)

Even I don't know why I am still nursing, other than what my Nanna, may she rest in peace, would have called "sheer cussedness."  Actually, there is one good reason: despite being constantly ill, Tatoe has had only one ear infection, after riding on a plane.  At this point Bug had had EIGHT.  My theory is that the constant suction of breastfeeding clears it all out a bit.  Also that he doesn't get as dehydrated because he loves BOOOOB more than things-in-cups. (Don't even mention bottles; he throws them on the floor and screeches MAAAAH!)

My immune system has gone completely haywire.  In addition to all the other things I can't eat, I have also reacted to: brandy, white wine, peanut butter, soy, and some spice (probably nutmeg or cloves).   This has necessitated a startling array of antihistamines, a large amount of misery, and a high chance of surgery due to The MDR Sinus Infection That Won't Die.

In consequence of all of the above, the rest of my body seems to also be freaking out.  My digestion and lady parts are both registering complaints, and I am deeply tired of dealing with it.

So as soon as it gets above freezing, the kiddo is getting (slowly) cut off.  Bonus?  I can leave him with my parents after we move!  And go somewhere ALONE!  I haven't been ALONE in FOUR YEARS!!!! Do you have any idea how excited I am about this?  SO excited.

*Currently 17 months old, sporting ten teeth, and drinking from a straw cup.  He'll be fine, once he gets over the tragic disappointment at NO MORE BOOB.

  1. I love the "sheer cussedness," I need to try and work that into a conversation today. Hmm, since I will probably only chat with C2 today, it might be challenging. On the other hand, he is full of cussedness quite often.

    ALONE! It is a definite benefit of the not nursing. Also, perhaps your body will start behaving itself once you don't have to put energy into the MAAAAH!

    1. Aren't all small children full of cussedness? "C2, are you doing that for a good reason, or out of sheer cussedness?"

      ALONE!!

    2. I managed to work it into a conversation with Patrick! Someone from Bicycle Company was chatting with Patrick about riding his bicycle to work in the winter, even during snowstorms. "It's rediculous, I don't think he even knows why he does it." Sheer cussedness? I suggested. And then I giggled inside my head.

  2. I can remember how exciting it was to go somewhere alone when my youngest child stopped nursing. That glorious feeling of freedom!

    You either deserve a medal or a psych eval for lasting so long. With my first, we starting weaning like on her first birthday, and she was totally weaned by 13 months. However, she never really asked for the boob or seemed particularly enamored of it.

    My son is 9.5mos and I am practically counting down the days. However, I anticipate he will be difficult to wean as he practically rends my clothes to gain access to my boobs.

    Best of luck! Enjoy the much deserved alone time!

    1. It could be both! But I vote for the psych eval.

      Tatoe likes to pull at my shirt and cry "I want MAAAH!" It promises to be awesome.

  4. I cannot BEGIN to tell you how happy I am to have weaned the poor, innocent Bean (at 21 months). He is fine; I am ECSTATIC.

    YAY WEANING.

      I can't comment normally, so let's try this! Unless this comment shows up three times in an hour or something.

      Wooo Hooo! I am thrilled to hear your suffering might almost be over. In that department, anyway. I hope it goes really well.

    2. The comment just went to moderation. Three times. :)

      There's a lot of crying "I want more MAAH!" so far - I should have done this before he learned to talk!
