Dr. S: "I walked by earlier and you were answering some student's question... but it was that tone of voice you use when you're really mad at me. I don't know what they were asking but YIKES."
I find myself saying, "Do you require assistance?" in a similar tone. Like when a family member can't find something right in front of his face. I think only my youngest child is aware of the meaning of tones and hastily assures me he can handle it.
I have no idea! Doubtless something about the regulation of core metabolism. It's probably just I use the "I am in charge here" tone of voice with the students, but I mostly don't talk like that to my spouse!
