Today I stopped to buy doughnuts from the doughnut truck, which is occasionally parked off the main road.
The doughnut truck is run by an older white guy, who has a Moscow Muppet sticker on the back of the truck (bad enough!) and also an Inf0-w4rs sticker.
Am I obligated to shun this business now? Relevant: in this county about 75% of people voted for Mango Mussolini; I probably cannot shun all of them.
Of course my first instinct is "Shun them all!" but I have the luxury of living in Cold City, surrounded by Moscow Muppet haters. My "7 Habits of Highly Effective People" book and the recent "How To Argue Better" podcast would have me focus on building relationships with people and then try to understand them, and they might try to understand me in turn. That's exhausting, and I really only have the energy to do that with family and close friends.
ReplyDeleteIf the doughnuts are really good, I would still buy them.
In a related note, do I need to boycott Menard's? (Because John Menard is the worst, pollutes my hometown, isn't great to his employees, and props up stupid current governor.) My alternative option is Home Depot. I know nothing about their business practices, except that the local store employees are very helpful.
Ergh, I probably be to boycott doughnut truck, especially as there's a less offensive option also in town.
DeleteIdk about Menard's. There are so many greedy, shady big business owners out there! I doubt Home Depot is crystal clear in its ethics either but a little quieter about it.
I've been shunning. You're not obligated, but I have stopped doing any business with any business that advertises that my money would be going to bad people. This makes getting gas pretty difficult. There are probably people who support evil who my money is still going to, but they don't advertise it. So, I guess I get by with a don't ask/don't tell policy.
ReplyDeleteHa, don't ask don't tell is mostly how I feel too. Confederate flag = no business ever. Don't advertise evil!
DeleteI'm shunning anywhere I can, knowing that I can't cover them all, but at least I'm making the effort that we can handle.
ReplyDeleteLike N&M I know that there are people who are evil that I'm supporting because I don't know they're evil but with limited resourcing, I need to do the best I can with what I've got.
