In Which I Buy Myself Things

I don't know what it is about this season - possibly I simply feel free to spend Fun Money - but I have enjoyed spending a relatively small amount of money on myself (like... maybe $200 total), which I have used to purchase:

A Kindle to replace mine whose battery has died from being used every day for years

A pair of gloves to replace some with holes

A bunch of fancy polymer clay to make myself earrings of various kinds

UV resin, a lamp, and a bunch of interesting metal pieces for the same purpose

A pair of very dramatic filigree earrings

And now over break (which starts in 3 weeks) I am going to be making unreasonable quantities of earrings, looking for jobs, and getting ready for/ dreading teaching an intro course next semester, for the first time.

Any good presents-to-self lately?

  1. I'm getting $100 from my father for the holiday and am thinking of buying a Roomba.

But I will probably just spend it all on books. That's what I usually do!

    1. I have two robot vacuums (one is for the screen porch, the other does the upstairs) and they are great. But so are books...

  2. This is also the season I typically splurge on myself. It started with the Bonne Maman jelly and honey Advent calendar in September which I was very excited to finally get started with today - mmmm strawberry rhubarb. And then I have mostly just been buying things to update my wardrobe - some cute dresses, some nerdy shirts to pair with jeans (Etsy has some real niche science shirts like my latest "powered by mitochondria and coffee"), and a pair of heeled boots.

    1. I also love strawberry rhubarb! I've never tried it as jam, I should make some this summer. I bet your boots are extremely stylish! I longed for a pair for years and then became too grumpy and middle aged to wear anything but clogs and sneakers.

  3. I've been buying books off my amazon wishlist-- I check it pretty much daily now to see what holiday sales they're having on things I already wanted. Like a $12.99 book down to $1.99 but only yesterday (today it's back to $12.99). I will be set for a week in the rural midwest even if nobody buys me books.

I also bought a bunch of holiday-themed masks. Not sure that counts though.

  4. Do new tile floors for my basement count? Otherwise, I've bought myself flowers from the grocery store, and a very silly https://www.lego.com/en-us/product/lego-star-wars-advent-calendar-2021-75307.

    1. I feel perhaps that the new flooring is for everyone! Flowers and advent calendar definitely count

  5. I bought myself a tea advent calendar from Adagio Tea and I'm very excited every morning to see what new tea I'll be drinking that day. Day one was a pumpkin spice black tea (a lovely, warming spicy tea) and today is a pomegranate grove herbal tea I'll drink at bedtime.

    1. Oooh, I looked at that advent calendar (even though I don't actually celebrate advent...). That sounds fun!

Does buying my husband's birthday present (a gorgeous, fancy wooden jigsaw puzzle that I coveted for myself) count? ;)

    1. No, I think you might have to buy your own fancy puzzle! Though that also sounds enjoyable!

Maybe I should have added... that I fully plan to make myself one day ;) But yes, I am thinking of getting myself a small one, too.
